Itinerary

Day one

In the city of Otavalo we will visit the Plaza de los Ponchos, the most important commercial center of craftsmanship and cultural interaction in Ecuador. Here we will be able to observe and acquire a variety of handicrafts made of tagua, balsa wood, semiprecious stones and also typical clothing accessories of the Otavalo culture.

With the completion of this activity we start our journey to the Intag Valley, having our first stop at the Cuicocha Lake, known as the Lake of the Gods or Tsui – Cocha, formed in a volcanic crater. It is located on the foot of the Cotacachi Volcano at an altitude of 3068 meter, which is part of the Cotacachi – Cayapas Ecological Reserve. Here we can take pictures and admire the landscape.

Our destination is Pucará, where we will stay with local host families. After lunch we will head to Santa Rosa to hike towards Plaza Gutiérrez, the oldest settlement of the Intag Valley. Along the way, we will see sugar cane plantations, a variety of orchids, and, with a bit of luck, birds such as the Andean cock of the rock, and guans, amongst others. We will also stop by the El Placer waterfall to relax and refresh ourselves for a short while.

Once we get to Plaza Gutiérrez, a group of local women will show us the ingenious way they work with cabuya (Furcreaincana), a natural fiber that is used to make handbags, hats, belts, and wallets, amongst other things.

After this visit we will go back to our host families to share our experiences and rest for the next day’s activities.

Technical Data: Transport Otavalo – Pucará, Intag: 2h, altitude Otavalo: 2500 meters above sea level, altitude Pucará: 1980 meters above sea level. Hiking Trail Santa Rosa - Plaza Gutiérrez: 4h, 7km. Level of difficulty easy. Altitude of the waterfall: 15 meters.

Day Two

Early in the morning we will help our families with their daily tasks. We will have fun feeding the pigs and milking the cows. After a delicious breakfast, we will visit the cane sugar mill and help to produce “santo” and “panela”, cane sugar sweets typical for this region. This will be a great moment to learn about the process and hear fascinating stories from the host family.

At nightfall, we will share an evening full of music, dance, stories, and the tasting of the cane sugar liquor made in the area. This cultural night will be the end of the day’s events.

Day Three

On our last day, we will visit a vista that offers splendid panoramas of the Intag valley. Afterwards, we will visit Pucará’s recycling center, where we will have a little tour to learn about the history of this project and other clever ecological designs the community is implementing. After lunch at the restaurant “Paradero Turístico la Cucharita”, we will prepare for our trip back from the Intag community.

Itinerary

Day One

Our tour starts in the city of Otavalo. Here we will visit the Plaza de los Ponchos, the most important commercial center of craftsmanship and cultural interaction in Ecuador. Here we will be able to observe and acquire a variety of handicrafts made of tagua, balsa wood, semiprecious stones and also typical clothing accessories of the Otavalo culture. We will enter the Intag Valley via the road to SelvaAlegre. At km 52 we will be able to observe the contrast between the natural beauty of the Quinde waterfall and the opencast exploitation of limestone.

Our trip begins in the smallest community in the Intag Valley, El Rosal, which carries its name for the beauty of its gardens that are guarding a variety of colourful and beautiful roses. In this place, a group of local women will show us one of their clever eco-businesses, like how to produce soap, shampoo and lotions on the basis of sábila (Aloe Vera). We will learn their step-by-step process and have a chance to participate.

In the afternoon we will have fun in the community kitchen, learning how to make the delicious yucca bread. Afterwards, we will be welcomed by our host families to relax for the rest of the day.

Day Two

The shining sun will likely join us for a hike to the Mármol waterfall, a magical place where we can enjoy the morning with a relaxing swim and admiring the diversity of the flora and fauna in this area. After a delicious lunch we will be spoiled with a relaxing sábila (Aloe Vera) massage by the women of El Rosal. This will revitalize us for a cultural night with our host families. This event, organized by the community, will be full of music, dance and happiness.

Day Three

In the morning we will head for the Tilapia Pool of the community, where we will pass our time fishing. Our catch will be prepared and served by the women of the community as our good-bye lunch. Upon arriving at our host families, we will plant a rose together in their gardens so that they will remember our visit at their community. After having enjoyed this delicious tilapia, we will say goodbye and begin our trip back.
